The department of oral pathology and microbiology started in the year 2001. This department deals with two subjects in BDS curriculum; dental anatomy, embryology and oral histology as well as oral and maxillofacial pathology and microbiology. Forensic odontology is the recent addition into our branch. Dental anatomy, embryology and oral histology is the subject taught in the first BDS which deals with the development, morphology, physiology, histology of tissues organs of head and neck to give an idea of normal structures before the student goes on to treat abnormalities. Oral pathology and microbiology deals with abnormalities of head and neck region where the incidence and prevalence of the diseases, etiopathogenesis, investigations and diagnosis of various diseases are taught to second and third year BDS students to make them efficient clinicians. The speciality of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, aims at acquiring adequate knowledge and the necessary skills to carry out investigative procedures and the ability to interpret laboratory findings, thus helping the dental and medical practitioners in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of anomalies and diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region. The department is well equipped with well experienced faculty to guide the UG students. It has many national and international publications to its credit.
